Mathis Oussou, "US soccer as a hobby and athletics as a project

DIARY OF AN ATHLETE

Written by Trackandmemes, March 23, 2023

Mathis Oussou is a young French athlete who juggles American soccer and athletics royally.

"I started US soccer last year, and in order to manage both sports at the same time, I train Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in track and field, and Wednesdays and Fridays in US soccer."

And even though Mathis always wanted to do track and field, it was a friend who influenced him to start.

Mathis Oussou, French athlete

How is your track and field season going now?

The winter season started very well. I started with a record of 14m37, which gave me confidence for the future. During this season, I was regularly above 14 meters. This earned me a second selection to the interleague (competition between the different athletic leagues in France).

Currently, this season is a success. I reached my goals, I am regional champion in triple, regional vice-champion in long jump... I jumped more than 14m50 in triple, which earned me a third place at the French Championship with a record of 14m72.

How was your last competition, the one where you achieved 14m72?

It was the best jump. I'm proud of it, because I did it on my first jump, and moreover, on a 13 meters board. So I did my first time on a 13-meter board, during these French championships.

What are your goals for the outdoor season?

I would like to make another podium at the French championships. The ultimate goal would be to make a first national selection for the European Championships in Jerusalem this summer. And in terms of performances, I would like to do more than 15 meters in the triple jump, and more than 7 meters in the long jump.

Do you practice another sport?

I started playing soccer last year.

It's a contact sport where it can be very hard, and I find it quite fun.

To be able to manage both, I rely on recovery. At night I really try to get at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep. Diet also plays a role, so I try to eat properly. I am not from dietbut I avoid junk food, fast food or anything too fatty.

Do you see any advantages and/or disadvantages in managing two sports at the same time?

As an advantage, it allows me to let off steam. After, as a disadvantage, I can't necessarily be at my best in athletics. So if I really want to perform, I will have to make a choice.

For me athletics is serious. It's more my US soccer practice that I consider a hobby. I have fun. I will continue with track and field, and probably stop playing soccer this year, or next year at the latest.

What has US soccer brought you?

Doing US soccer, I realize what it feels like to give yourself for others, and not just do things for yourself. Because in athletics, even if you train in a group, it is still a very individual sport.

What does your coach think of your double sport practice?

My coach is a little upset about it, because the time I spend on US Soccer is time I don't spend on athletics. But apart from that, he seems to respect my choice.

I have a very good relationship with my coach, Julien Langlet. We've been working together for four years now. We get along very well, we laugh a lot, which creates a good training atmosphere. In fact, it even makes me want to come to training.

Despite the good performances and this podium at the French Championship, my coach tells me to stay focused and keep my head on my shoulders, because I still have many things to learn and accomplish.

Here is a video clip of your favorite athlete, Fred Kerley. After watching the video, can you tell me what your biggest fear is?

My biggest fear would be not to succeed in my sporting life and not to start a family.

And from the following excerpt, what do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself becoming a professional athlete with a good track record.
