Dorian Lairi: "This summer I'm aiming for the U23 Europes and a title in the U23 category at the French championships".

DIARY OF AN ATHLETE

Written by Trackandmemes, May 15, 2021

I am 21 years old and my discipline is high jump. I got my personal record in Rennes, France, during the university championships by clearing the 2m20 bar. I also won the French espoir championship in 2019, and was selected three times for the French youth team.

Who inspired you to reach the level you have now?

If I had to name only one person, I would say Mutaz Barshim. I had other influences in the sports world, like Kobe Bryant, a famous basketball player. I also admit to finding inspiration in certain works such as manga. The state of mind of certain characters inspires me a lot.

What exactly is your discipline, from a technical point of view?

In reality, it is quite simple. You have to cross a bar by taking your impulse only on one foot. The most used technique, the Fosbury, consists in running first in a straight line and then in a curve in order to cross the bar with the back.

What advice would you give to beginners to learn jumping techniques?

I would say take your time! The most recurrent problem is that athletes go down before they have even reached their maximum height. However, the impulse and ascent phase is very important!

When you look at you, you'd think your back was bending in half outright. Have you ever experienced back problems?

No, for my part, I have not encountered any back problems... At least for the moment.

D’ailleurs, quelles sont les blessures les plus fréquentes en saut en hauteur ?

I would say that the most common injuries are located in the knees and ankles in the majority of cases.

Comment t’es-tu arrangé pour rester performant durant la crise sanitaire ?

In 2020, it was complicated. But honestly, this year, I didn't see a big change compared to the seasons when the coronavirus didn't exist yet. Except for the weight training sessions, especially with the Creps, (Centre de Ressources, d'Expertise et de Performance Sportive).

What are your goals for the outdoor season?

This summer I am aiming for the U23 Europes and a title in the U23 category at the French Championships. Participating in the Olympic Games is also one of my goals. I am aiming for the one that will take place in Paris in 2024.

What would you say to the you from before? The you who had not yet accomplished all that you have been able to accomplish? The The you who was just dreaming?

I would tell her to never stop and to keep motivated! Even in the most complicated moments, because great things can still happen to her.
