The Leconte twins, fast and fused

DIARY OF AN ATHLETE

Interview written by Luna Djerrada on 27 March 2023

The French twins, Jerry and Mallory, are no strangers to performance. Both of them have already been selected for the French national team, and Jerry's 100m record is 10'' 39, while his sister's is 11'' 26.

But do we really know our twins' personalities? Described as fusional, but also unique, the pair reveal themselves...

Jerry et Malory Leconte

How would you describe your relationship?

Jerry: I'd say it's more than just a sibling relationship. It's a close relationship, and has been ever since we were kids. We've always been so naturally close that we do everything together, whether in everyday life or in sport.

MalloryOur relationship is unique. There really aren't two like ours. It's even stronger because we're twins, so we understand each other without saying a word. What I think, he already thinks. I find that incredible.

When you got together in the world of athletics, was your objective the same?

JerryWe started together because we had the same objective: to be the best. Me for the boys and Mallory for the girls.

MalloryYes, clearly. We started athletics for the same reasons and our goals are still the same today.

How do you support each other in your respective processes?

JerryWe have different ways of supporting each other. As for Mallory, she likes to be demonstrative and shout as usual. 😂 As for me, I'm pretty calm. All I need is a few words to support her, but words that carry a lot of meaning for her, which will boost her in her process!

Jerry et Mallory Leconte

MalloryWe help each other with everything! Whether it's motivating ourselves to go out and train, not giving up during the sessions, maintaining good discipline, or even on running technique. It's great because we combine determination with success!

For the Mediterranean Games in 2022, you met up in Oran, Algeria. How does it feel to be part of a national team with your brother and sister?

JerryIt's simply a source of pride. I remember when she was first selected, she told me to join her as soon as possible. It took me a while, but here I am with her today! And we're living these selections to the full!

MalloryIt's unbelievable! You say you're in the French national team with your twin brother! It's like the reward for everything we've worked so hard for! We're really enjoying the moment, staying together and taking lots of photos!

We're really proud of each other, and we'll keep working to relive moments like this!

Jerry

What's your best memory of your sister in competition?

The best memory I have of Mallory in competition is when she won her first French cadet title in the 60m. I was really proud of her, especially as she wasn't the favourite. She gave me a huge boost for the summer season that followed.

And what is it about Mallory that gets you so worked up?

Nothing in particular. 😂

Mallory

What's your best memory of your brother in competition?

There's one in particular that I'm keeping.

Jerry already knows him 😂😂

That was in 2020, after the confinement. On a summer's day, he ran the 100m at Evry Bondoufle. He beat his record with a time of 10'60. Then he followed that up with a competition in Saint-Denis the same day, running two 100m and a 200m!

He broke his personal best again that day, clocking times of 10'57 and 21'27! It was incredible. The atmosphere... It was all there! What's more, he moved up from 40th place in the rankings to 8th place, which enabled him to qualify for the French U23 Elite Championships in Albi at the time!

Jerry, in 2020 when he clocked a performance of 10'' 57

Really too strong! He really is a source of motivation on a daily basis, and a hard worker!

And what do you like about Jerry?

I'm not going to throw him too many flowers or he'll get a big head, but I will mention a few of his many qualities, such as his ability to listen, the light he radiates from his joy and good humour, our complicity and the fact that he's not a head case!

Do you prefer :

A. Qualifying for the 2024 Games

B. Win €100,000 together but only one of you can go to the Games of a lifetime

JerryI don't think I need to consult Mallory to know that we both want to qualify for the 2024 Games! 😂 It's a lifelong dream, our shared dream!

Mallory: Ahah, qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, of course! We're not going to pass up this goal for the two of us that we've been training for for years for €100,000 when all's said and done? 😂😂😂

But on a more serious note, will we be seeing you at the Olympic Games?

Jerry: The Olympic Games for two would be the Holy Grail. And to be honest, that's clearly the goal. I wouldn't be 100% satisfied if, for whatever reason, she wasn't there. I can't imagine being without her at the Paris Olympics, and if we're training hard today, it's because we believe in it!

MalloryWe hope! If we reach the minimum, we'll be there, and we intend to be! 🙏🏾

How are your preparations going at the moment? Are your objectives on track to be achieved?

JerryMy preparation is going well at the moment. My performances aren't bad, but they're still far from what I'd set myself as a target. But I'm not worried. It's all a question of process and perseverance!

MalloryI've just come back from injury, so preparation has been complicated. However, they say you come back even stronger after an injury, so I'm confident for the rest of the season! The challenge is even more motivating!
